petergishPeter A. Gish was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1962 at a time when his father, Col. Peter Michael Gish, USMCR, was completing his Masters Degree in Fine Arts at Yale University. As a child, Peter accompanied his father on trips, learning to draw and paint from nature. Peter also spent countless hours in his father’s art studio in Westport, Connecticut, observing figure drawing and sculpture classes, as well as working on still life subjects set for him by his father.

During high school, Peter continued to paint and won the Bruce Museum (Greenwich, CT) Art Competition in the late seventies. He also continued to work with his father, eventually helping him to restore a set of mural paintings, which his father had painted in 1949 at the Coolidge Hotel in White River Junction, Vermont. Over this period of time, Peter had several interactions with the well-known New England artist, Paul Sample, as well as the Hungarian painter, Oskar Kokoshka, with whom his father had studied in Salzburg, Austria.

Peter graduated from Dartmouth College in 1984 with a degree in Fine Arts and Comparative Religion. A Phi-Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude graduate, he was the recipient of the Marcus Heiman Achievement Award in the Arts (1983). In 1984, he won the Adelbert Ames Fine Arts Award and was the first Dartmouth student to be awarded the prestigious Louis Sudler National Prize in the Arts. His senior year at Dartmouth he held a one-man show entitled “Qualities of Winter Light” for which he received Highest Honors in his major field of study. Two years later, he held another one-man exhibition at Dartmouth entitled “Night Landscapes.” These exhibitions were Peter’s first foray into large landscapes emphasizing human interaction with the natural world.

While doing post-graduate work at Oxford University in the late 1980’s, Peter attended classes at the Ruskin School of Drawing. In 1988, his painting entitled “Vermont Barn” was accepted into the National Academy of Design 163rd Annual Exhibition in New York City.

Peter continued to paint regularly during the 1990s and early 2000s, periodically exhibiting his work while pursuing a career in the renewable energy field (see further details on Peter’s professional career below). Increasingly concerned by Climate Change, in 2005, he built an art studio in Thornton, NH, where he continued to explore large landscapes inspired by the surrounding forests and mountains of New England.

Since 2011, Peter’s work has been exhibited regularly in New York City, culminating with Peter being awarded the SOLO Award [Best Artist] at ArtExpo 2016 Peter’s work is held in many private collections, as further set forth in the List of Works.

Peter is a member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists (Westport, CT), the Sudbury Art Association (Sudbury, MA) and the Concord Art Association (Concord, MA). His work is held in a number of private collections.

Outside of his work in fine art, Peter A. Gish recently co-founded Ortus Climate Mitigation, a company dedicated to help solve the climate crisis. Through his company, Ukraine Power Resources, Peter last year successfully completed a large wind farm along the Black Sea notwithstanding the C-19 pandemic. In December 2010 Mr. Gish was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of Apparent, Inc., a California based solar energy company. Previously, Peter co-founded First Wind in 2001 and served on the Board of Directors until 2015. Mr. Gish has been a lecturer in finance and public policy at the University of Massachusetts, Graduate School of Management, and has spoken before the United Nations. He has a Bachelors Degree (Magna Cum Laude/Phi Beta Kappa) from Dartmouth College, Juris Doctor Degree (Cum Laude) from Boston College Law School, and a Masters Degree in Jurisprudence (Honors) from Oxford University. For over twenty years he has been an avid proponent for meaningful action on climate change.
